Cancer Awareness

last stage of Breast Cancer. Photo courtesy http://www.encognitive.com

Recently, I under went a painful biopsy to determine if there are any cancer cells present in my uterus.  Uterus lining is thick, and my gynecologist wants to be sure that it is not cause of the benign cells. Other than thick lining, I’ve sever symptoms of PCOS   that prompted my doctor for a Biopsy.  My mother lost her battle to cancer 8 years back, she had 2nd stage Lymphoma. Lymphoma is one of the deadliest cancers with minuscule percentile of surviving rate, unfortunately my mum was not one of them.  Endometrial Cancer, is a cancer that starts in the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus (womb). Lack of my knowledge on this type of cancer, prompted me to do a search on the internet.  And I have found a website (Click Here) that explains this cancer in a language that is easily understood, also has informations on different types of cancers.

Cancer is Cancer and is not good for anyone to have it. From my own personal experience, I understand how cancer affects the person and their family. Social networking site is a powerful tool to spread awareness on cancers, however, the recent surge on status messages about cancers have irked me, to say the least. One of the recent messages I received on facebook message inbox read, ‘‘ Support of Breast Cancer Awareness!! So we all remember last year’s game of writing your bra color as your status? Or the way we like to have our handbag handy?   Last year, so many people took part that it made national news and the constant updating of status reminded everyone why we’re doing this and helped raise awareness!! Do NOT tell any males what the mean…keep them guessing!! And please copy and paste (in a message) this to all your female friends! It’s time to confuse the men again (not that it’s really that hard to do ;);) The idea is to choose the month you were born and the day you were born. Pass this on to the GIRLS ONLY and let’s see how far it reaches around. The last one about the bra went around all over the world. Your status should say: “I am going to________________for___________ months.” Use your birth month for the place you’ll live. January–Mexico February– London March–Miami April–Dominican Republic May–France June– St Petersburg July–AustriaAugust–Germany September–New York October–Amsterdam November– Las Vegas December– Columbia Use the day you were born for how many months you will live there. Write a reply to all…and have fun, ladies!! ”

This is a mockery to all the brave warriors who fought and fighting Breast cancers. Let say, If i am going to Las Vegas for 23 moths, how does this raise awareness? I don’t understand a bit. Also,   writing my bra color increase the awareness on Brest cancer?  Really?  Writing ones bra color as a status message is more like a perverts idea, than awareness. When there is a cancer in the breast/s it is amputated! Unlike developed nations, where insurance covers the cosmetic surgery in reconstructing the breast, many poor women simply live with out it.  Most of them don’t even wear bras and are often fall in to depression. Also, some men have it too, how is that for a real awareness? All I ask is be cognizant before you put up some stupid  status message in the name of Awareness. If you want to bring awareness do it in the right way, indulge in a sensible conversation with your pals. Put up status that speaks of the risk factor of different types of cancers, or what causes these cancer, or discuss the key statistics of  cancers like I learnt today that; About 46,470 new cases of cancer of the body of the uterus (uterine corpus) will be diagnosed. About 8,120 women will die from cancers of the uterine body. Be empathetic and supportive to those who are fighting a war to survive. And please stop entertaining spammers , when you get such a mail in future feel free to mark it as spam.

I wish all the best to people like me who have done their biopsy and is awaiting results, also to those who are facing the battle and embracing lives as it gets; you guys are real role models. I personally believe this is an opportunity to hone my understanding of cancer, and be more appreciative of my life, and people in it.
